Webinars, by now you have probably attended one or maybe even hosted one of your own! Presenting can be overwhelming for many people – I really enjoy presenting via video and on webinar’s however, get me in a LIVE ROOM and the story changes – this all stems from a harrowing experience as a 12 year old – here let me recap just for kicks!
At the ripe old age of 12 I got selected to be a competitor at the junior schools ‘Speak Out Awards’ – I’m guessing because I loved to speak so much – yes, I was always the kid getting told to shut up, so in their wisdom the teachers thought that I would be a good candidate!
Looking back now, this makes me laugh because as I type this out it really brings forth the fact that you should only present on things you are passionate about – a) It helps you deliver a fantastic presentation as you ooze enthusiasm – I think vaguely my topic was Cruelty to Animals – big mistake #1 – at 12 I didn’t give a rats about cruelty to animals – I thought I should because it was politically correct, don’t get me wrong, I don’t endorse cruelty to animals, but I was never THAT KID who was going to be a vet or an animal activist….! At the time I can remember trying to think of something I was passionate about – nothing came to mind…
ON THE BIG DAY I sat and watched other kids giving presentations on their wonderful student exchange holidays where they got to buy expensive perfume duty free and I remember thinking… poor family, loud Croatian strict father…. boy I should’ve really given the audience a SHOCKING speech – but NO – I chose ‘cruelty to animals’ WHAT WAS I THINKING>!@ By the time I got to the stage, I cared so little about my topic I couldn’t remember my speech, I dropped my palm cards and FROZE whilst the audience laughed at me and the kids made fun of me – that day I vowed to never ever ever get on stage again – and here I am ROFLMAO!
True story, when I first started managing at my old tourism company 6 years ago I was too scared to take brochures in to outlets and talk to people – I kid you not – people who know me now almost hit the floor in SHOCK!
“Yes me, loud, outspoken Kat was too afraid to talk to people – I struggled to sell also as once again it involved talking to people!”
In short – with passion, enthusiasm and a big enough goal it can all be turned around – at the high in my management/marketing career I had an 18.5 seat filled average on a 20 person boat – most companies would do cartwheels for those kinds of conversions – so how did I make it happen?
a) I was fiercely passionate about my topic – I would have and still defend it to the death – THIS IS KEY and
b) Personal development – I devoured everything and everything financial literacy, self help / improvement etc etc
Anyway enough about all of that – now you know more about me – and my trip down memory lane as a cumbersome 12 year old served only to reinforce the fact that now even as an adult – if you’re going to talk about something it’s best to know YOUR TOPIC!
